Racism, sexism and classism. Sure I read about some sad stuff, but could I feel a personal connection? She has a seamless ability to catapult her readers into an undefined time that feels both medieval and mythical with a hint of realism that keeps you grounded to the here and now. It was the grip in which one held those fragments that counted. And my heart was in my throat. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up.

The basis of the story is, this country called Lumatere went through a rough time. First the royal family was killed, then the citizens started turning on one another. One group of people were targeted most fiercely. When the leader was burned at the stake, she cursed the land of Lumatere with seclusion from the rest of the world and death by fire. Several of the citizens fled before the curse was set and so escaped its punishment. Finnikin and Sir Topher were among those lucky people.
Several years later Finnikin and Sir Topher find out that one of the royal family is still alive. They are then tasked with protecting the only one who can find the lost royal. Finnikin of the Rock was a thoughtful book. Not only was it filled with humor and well designed characters it had deep and thoughtful lines.
Rather than float into nothing. Finnikin has realized that living is different than surviving. The way the exiles, Lumaterians who escaped, survived was in large mobile camps with little food and less to live for.
Finnikin saw that was no way to live, just floating down a river of nothing every day. Instead he chose to believe that going back to Lumatere was possible. That was when he became truly happy. Another example is when the Priest King was talking to Froi, one of the many secondary characters. Who are we without our words?
Humans are nothing without the languages we cherish so much. The beginning of history is when writing was invented. Not only was Finnikin of the Rock a thoughtful and deep book it was also very romantic book. This was the place when Finnikin was basically pronouncing his love for her. Finnikin of the the Rock was a fantastic book. The end of this book was the best ending I have ever read and I have read a lot of books like this in the past couple of years.
I would like to recommend this to anyone who likes lots of romance, strong female characters, medieval times, and magic. The main character did annoy me a bit at times because he was a bit obnoxious or something. And I did have a theory about the main plot twist which happened to come true. Despite all this I did really enjoy Finnikin of the Rock and will look forward to the next in the series until I eventually get there.
Shelves: reads Dear Finnikin of the Rock, what happened? You and I were supposed to be enjoying the beginning of a beautiful friendship, walking into the sunset together. Alas, no walking into the sunset was meant for us. Dear Finnikin of the Rock, what happened? You seemed to have the whole package, after all.
