I picked up the first couple at the same time and then after that I bought them as soon as they hit the shelves. In my review, I want to talk about what the gazetteer offers in general and consider how adaptable it is. I recall picking up a copy of the third edition at Target, as much for the novelty of being able to buy rpg stuff there. The world feels like a design by committee, which it was. This world has ascended Immortals instead of gods, with that epic path and their conflicts figuring into many stories.

Beginning with the Grand Duchy of Karameikos, this series provides a rich tapestry of background material for player and DM alike, sure to benefit the gamer immeasurably. It was published in April Introducing the "GAZ" series. Bruce Heard became the developer of the Known World setting by chance.

Meanwhile, Bruce Heard was the Acquisition Coordinator, in charge of freelancers — which de facto made him the guy running the Known World. Heard was interested in producing these geographic books for the Known World for two reasons. Second, because details were constantly accruing in the Known World adventures — particularly in the "X" Expert series, which was focused on wilderness, and so had to detail wide geographic locales out of pure necessity.

Without any sort of written guide, these details could be troublesome. A section on "communities" allowed Allston to detail some specific locales within Karameikos. Heard was also able to design the graphical look of the "GAZ" books — which stands out in advance of what TSR was producing at the time.

The use of a single image as the background of the pages an icon for Karameikos was also quite unusual for Finally, the colored hex-map in "The Grand Duchy of Karameikos" is also notable; it would be the basis of the "TM" Trail Map series in just a few years. The idea was in the air at TSR, as similar "non-weapon proficiencies" were introduced in Oriental Adventures Expanding the Known World.

Heard chose Karameikos for the first "GAZ" book because it was the best detailed area of the Known World, dating back to the introduction of it and the Known World! It draws further details from B6: "The Veiled Society" , which detailed the capital city of Specularum, and X "Red Arrow, Black Shield" , which generally described the nations of this part of the Known World. With that said, there is of course lots of new information on Karameikos in this supplement.

It also does a soft reboot of the Known World as it had been presented from , primarily by Zeb Cook. This more populated environment would be the basis of the Known World as it developed into Mystara through the "GAZ" series.

GAZ1 - The Grand Duchy of Karameikos

Just superstitious natives, humanoids and stupid Thyatian soldiers. Karameikos sits on the south shore of the continent of Brun , west of The Thyatian Empire and east of the Five Shires ; to the north, broad mountain ranges separate the nation from The Republic of Darokin and The Emirates of Ylaruam. Most of Karameikos is covered with thick forests, hardwoods and softwoods, and is largely unexplored. There are broad patches of rich soil, especially beside the broad Highreach River where farming is good. The capital city of Specularum is a thriving and very active seaport with around 50, inhabitants; other notable sites are the city of Kelvin and the town of Threshold , in the northern hill country, a haven for adventurers surrounded by humanoid-inhabited wilderness. History In ancient times the land of Traldar was home to a heroic civilisation of barbarian-like people. About two thousand years ago, a massive army of beast-men attacked the Traldar people.

Coupled with this lull in activity is a sense of nostalgia due to the 40th anniversary. Having the chance to purchase a few titles from the glory days of my youth is certainly worth a few bucks. Does this first Gazetteer hold up to the modern eye? The first thing that struck me about reading through GAZ1 after all these years was the sheer amount of text.

So, does The Grandy Duchy of Karameikos hold up more than two decades later? To find out more, including how to control cookies, see here: There are many frictions between the Thyatians and Traladarans, but increasingly they are coming to think of themselves as a single nation. After the introduction, the book is divided into two sections, the Gazetteer section, and the Adventure section. Beginning with the Grand Duchy of Karameikos, this series provides a rich tapestry of background material for player and DM alike, sure to benefit the gamer immeasurably. About a century ago, the Thyatians, on one of their periodic conquest sweeps, moved an army into Traladara, conquering the coastal regions and some inland communities and declaring the nation to be a protectorate of the Empire.

Their original setting consisted of a large continent with fictionalized nations that were based on real-world historical cultures. Inspired by author H. Lovecraft and his work in creating a fiction shared universe , Schick and Moldvay named their setting as the "Known World" so it could be expanded upon by other players. The cultural and geographic campaign background section offers a brief history and timeline for each nation; basic geography, climate, and ecology; and, fundamental social and political concepts of the region. Each Gazetteer also offers a list of scenario ideas appropriate to the campaign setting. In the officially published material, the Known World concentrated on the eastern portion of Brun along with the lands of the Sea of Dawn. The continents of Mystara resemble those of the earth approximately million years ago.
